Who we are

About Terp517

Terp517 exists because a cannabis label is easy to over-read. It lists a THC percentage, a few terpenes and a test date, and it's tempting to treat that as a forecast of how you'll feel. It's a measurement of one sample. Everything past that is interpretation, and a lot of the interpretation online is marketing.

We're a cannabis education and culture publication based in Lansing, writing for the 517 and for Michigan as a whole. Our readers are adults 21 and over: curious consumers, budtenders, cultivators, processors, lab staff, policy watchers, and medical-cannabis patients looking for general education rather than medical advice.

What we cover

  • Terpenes: aroma compounds, terpene profiles and the claims made about them
  • Cannabis Science: how cannabis compounds meet the body, and how to weigh a study
  • Michigan Cannabis: Cannabis Regulatory Agency rules, policy and what a license guarantees
  • Lab Testing: certificates of analysis, potency numbers and what they can support
  • Cannabinoids: THC, CBD and the minor compounds on your label
  • Cultivation Science: how growing, drying and curing shape a lab result

Our articles live in The Terp Report.

How we write and check a story

Every piece keeps five things apart: what a lab measured, what consumers report, what researchers have demonstrated, what marketers claim and what's still uncertain. When those disagree, we say so instead of picking the most exciting one.

We cite primary sources wherever we can, such as state agency documents, federal reports and peer-reviewed studies, and we link them so you can check our reading. We say how strong the evidence is. If we get something wrong, we fix it in the article and add a dated correction note at the bottom.

Advertising is handled separately from editorial and shown in labeled ad spaces. Sponsored articles, if we run them, are labeled as sponsored.

What we won't do

We never encourage impaired driving. We don't publish instructions for unlicensed cannabis production or for getting around Michigan's rules. We don't present cannabis as a cure for serious disease. Nothing here is written for minors, and we don't point anyone toward illegal sales.
